Poetry Corner
Africa
by Maya Angelou

Thus she had lain
sugar cane sweet
deserts her hair
golden her feet
mountains her breasts
two Niles her tears
Thus she has lain
Black through the years.

Over the white seas
rime white and cold
brigands ungentled
icicle bold
took her young daughters
sold her strong sons
churched her with Jesus
bled her with guns.
Thus she has lain.

Now she is rising
remember her pain
remember the loses
her screams loud and vain
remember her riches
her history slain
now she is striding
although she had lain.

Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson Greatest Of All Time

The death of entertainment and music icon Michael Jackson has shocked the world. The 50 year old entertainer father of three was preparing for sold out summer concerts in London when he experienced what has been deemed a massive cardiac arrest. Though the circumstances of his death remain unclear his extraordinary life in the public spotlight from a young boy to an aging man is what will be remembered. The Billie Jean moonwalk from Motown's 25th Anniversary show. How his music forced MTV to show black artist, who previously only showed music from white entertainers. He transcended race and generations. He made Thriller and Thriller changed everything. Thriller was the top selling album of all time. His music video premieres were shown on prime time TV. He was an icon the likes of which in an era of instant communication, may never be seen again. CONTINUE

Obama Healthcare
The Public Option Health Care Reform and The Axis of Health Care Evil (Canada UK New Zealand)

Some of the Senate's most vocal opponents of a public health care option constituents need it the most. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, best illustrated in his daily rants, is against any public health care plan or just about any reform for the American health care system proposed by the Democrats. In fact he and the Republican leadership has followed a typical and tired script written and directed by the lobbyist for the health insurance industry. It's like a bad movie where one can utter the lines right before they are spoken. CONTINUE

Obama Sotomayor
Sonia Sotomayor Obama's Wise Choice

What is the right wing Republican view of a proper judge? Judges in the mode of Scalia, Thomas or Alito? Judges who are so-called strict constructionist? Judges who are pro-life? Whatever their definition may be Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor does not fit their bill.

Judge Sonia Sotomayor, a Princeton and Yale Law graduate, a distinguished prosecutor, advocate, and judge is undoubtedly qualified to sit on the nation's highest court. Her critics, the most vocal of whom reside on AM radio, contend that she is out of step with mainstream America... CONTINUE

Prop 8
On Prop 8 California Supreme Court Gets It Wrong

The California Supreme Court held that a majority of people can take away fundamental rights, in the Prop 8 case marriage, of a minority group through the state ballot initiative process. This decision was not made in 1809 but in 2009. The California State Supreme Court ruling is not only wrong and illogical its decision violates the U.S. Constitution on the basis of equal protection and the fundamental right to marry and should be challenged in federal court. The Court states, “neither the language of the relevant constitutional provisions, nor our past cases, support the proposition that any of these rights is totally exempt from modification by a constitutional amendment adopted by a majority of the voters through the initiative process.” Unbelievable.

The far-reaching implications of such a holding is mind boggling. The rights of minority groups are not protected in the “liberal” California. CONTINUE

Obama Cheney
Obama's Nixon Problem

President Barack Obama's administration has yet another growing and gathering problem. Another problem with historical implications. This problem is not with the economy or the prospect of universal health care. The problem is what to do about the criminality of the previous administration. An administration whose so-called legal opinions with respect to Presidential power and defining torture are so without merit that the attorney authors of these memo's should be investigated for possible disbarment from the legal profession.

The recent memo's released by the Justice Department, as a result of a lawsuit filed by the ACLU under the Freedom of Information Act, revealed that the so called enhanced interrogation techniques employed by the Bush administration were tantamount to torture. CONTINUE

Pelosi Defending Nancy Pelosi

Republicans are piling on Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi because of what she may have known about water boarding. However, their tactics is nothing more than a diversionary tactic to take pressure off of investigating the true perpetrators or what may have been an illegal program, the Bush administration. Do the Republicans and their media sympathizers not remember that Speaker Pelosi was not even the Speaker of the House in 2002, 2003? I know NBC wants to distance itself from its liberal brother MSNBC but come on Matt Lauer never mentioned the fact that Pelosi was not even Speaker when briefed on these tactics. She only became minority leader in 2003. She and the Congressional Democrats did not wield much power in 2002, 2003. Further former Senator Bob Graham stated that he received no such briefing on water boarding. CONTINUE

Obama Chavez
Right Wing Hating on Obama and Chavez Handshake

Haters gonna hate the saying goes so of course the right wing is up and arms over President Obama's handshake and greeting with twice elected Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. To the right wing Obama can do nothing right. Former Speaker of the House and so-called historian Newt Gingrich appeared on the Today Show and proceeded to rip Obama for shaking the leaders hand. Repeatedly stating without interruption from Meredith Viera that Chavez hates America. A statement that for some reason went unchallenged by the interviewer leaving the impression to the uninformed that Obama happily greets those who are anti-American.

A natural follow up question for Newt Gingrich would have been something to the effect of do you think that Chavez is anti-American or anti the previous American administration? Given the fact that the U.S. supported the coup by oil executives that almost toppled him. CONTINUE

Fox News Corporation
The Teabagging News Network

What one needs to know about the Fox News orchestrated Tea Party's is the confederate flags flying behind a beaming Sean Hannity. The crowds were only diverse in their fears. Fear of being left behind a global economy and economic uncertainty. Fearing immigration. Fearful of gun rights. A crowd fearing any other. The fake outrage at taxes and government spending which is keeping the entire economy afloat is bizarre. Where was the outrage when George W. Bush increased government spending beyond imagine and cut taxes in the midst of two wars which was and is an economic recipe for disaster. Even John McCain stated that cutting taxes while trying to pay for two wars did not make sense. CONTINUE

Obama Emanuel
Obama Is The Point Guard

The Obama Presidency is not yet 100 days old and the cable news talking heads are harping on a couple of talking points (1) President's Obama's relationship with the Democratically controlled Congress. Moreover, the issue of whether it is the President or the Congress that is driving the agenda and (2) Whether or not President Obama is taking on too many issues at once instead of just focusing on the economy.

One would not have noticed given the events of the last eight years but in our constitutional system of government Congress has most of the power not the president. It is the Congress that passes the laws not the President. So what good would it do for President Obama to pick a fight with members of his own party who he needs to pass his legislative initiatives? CONTINUE

Rihanna Chris Brown
Rihanna and Chris Brown Should Go Their Own Way

An interesting aspect of the Chris Brown Rihanna case is the degree to which the national tabloids and entertainment celebrity television and blogs have covered their ongoing events. African American entertainers and stars especially young stars have not in the past gotten much national press in these tabloids they are not usually the targets of paparazzi flashes. Although one wishes the two stars would be getting more attention for something positive than coverage of what is possibly an abusive relationship and the bigger issue of why women stay with men that hit them. CONTINUE

Obama Republicans
Republicans Pretend Election Did Not Happen

The GOP reaction to the economic stimulus bill now passed by Congress has been bizarre. They are behaving as if the country did not resoundingly reject the economic policies of the last eight years. Lets not forget that President Obama's victory was substantial. It was much larger than Bush's alleged win over Kerry and the Democrats in Congress gained additional seats in the House and are one election cycle from having a filibuster proof majority in the U.S. Senate. Not one republican in the House voted for stimulating the American economy through tax cuts and spending. So under the usual republican logic by not voting to support tax cuts did they in essence support a tax increase?

It seems the republican party is clinging to a misguided belief that America is a center right nation. A notion that simply is not true. CONTINUE

Obama Republicans
Black History Month Does Not End With Black President

The idea advocated by some that Black History Month should now cease because America has an African American president does not make much sense. One is actually not sure what one has to do with the other. Obama's victory and presidency is undoubtedly historic but the teaching of the trials and tribulations of people of African descent in America should not end due to one's election. As the teaching of the British Empire and European centered civilization did not cease with Bush's presidency. CONTINUE

Obama Inauguration
President Barack Obama's Inaugural Address

On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.

We remain a young nation, but in the words of scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness. CONTINUE

Gaza Oakland
Where Is The Love? Violence From Oakland To Gaza

Where Is The Love? It's been an auspicious start to 2009. A month where we celebrate the principles of non-violence advocated by Martin Luther King, Jr. has started with violence. In Oakland the year began with the shooting in the back of an unarmed young black male. The young man named, Oscar Grant III, was lying faced down on a train platform when executed by a transit cop. The murder was witnessed by many and was caught on video that has gone viral. The viral video illustrates what is known throughout the black world that in the culture of policing the life of black people is simply not valued. The people of Oakland, of all backgrounds, races, and ethnicities rightfully decided to have a protests or two. CONTINUE

Obama and Bush
The First Black President and The Last White President

One of the most interesting aspects of President-Elect Barack Obama's victory over John McCain and becoming the nation's first African American elected President is the coalition of voters he used to obtain victory. Obama won with a broad coalition of African American, Latino, young white voters, and women. An electoral coalition that will only grow with time. During the primaries and the general election there were calls and suggestions that America was not ready for a black President. America answered with a resounding yes.

His win was just as geographically diverse winning the southern states of Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida; the southwestern states of Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada. Obama owned the Midwest winning Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio and almost winning Missouri. The northeast and west coast remained blue. CONTINUE

Big 3 Auto It's Not The Union; It's The Economy Stupid! by Figaro Joseph

Some of the major newspaper organizations in the United States are having financial difficulties. Who is to blame? Answer: the union. The U.S. automakers are having financial difficulties. Who is the blame? Answer: the union. Toyota Motor, one of the main foreign automakers in the U.S., expects financial loss for the first time in seven decades. Who is to blame? Answer: the union. Oops, sorry! Toyota (in the U.S.) doesn't have a union.

Newspapers from around the country and U.S. Senators from many southern states have been on a union-bashing binge lately. They are referred to here as critics. Their favorite punching bag over the past couple of months has been the United Automobile Workers (UAW). CONTINUE

Somali Pirates Piracy Is Not Terrorism: It's Something Else by Figaro Joseph

Pirates have seized more than two dozens ships off the Horn of Africa this year. However, piracy off the Horn of Africa did not make much national and international news until this October when pirates seized an Ukranian ship, Faina, carrying weapons bought by the Kenyan government. The Faina was carrying 33 tanks and tons of other heavy weaponry. Why did the Kenyan government buy these weapons? Let's rephrase the question: Against whom is the Kenyan government planning to use these weapons? This is a question worth asking and it certainly deserves an answer. This piece, however, will not answer it. Instead, this piece focuses on distinguishing between piracy and terrorism.

Who asked Figaro for this distinction? Answer: No one; but I want to respond to some of the so-called experts who keep conflating the two issues. CONTINUE

Lil Wayne
Lil Wayne Is The Champion

Hip hop can be like professional wrestling. Although there are no official hip hop champions, occasionally in hip hop there is a “franchise champion” a Hulk Hogan, a Rock, a Stone Cold Steve Austin to carry the brand, carry the label. In hip hop it has been arguably, Run DMC, Public Enemy, Hammer, NWA, Biggie, Tupac, Dre, Snoop, Jay Z, Eminem ,50 Cent, Kanye, and now Lil Wayne to carry the hip hop brand, and puts it on his back. Some of these artist have been transitional champions. ie.. a champion in between eras, for instance, Jay Z inherited what was left of the east coast /west coast bullshit and became a mogul. Which artist are or were transitional champions and which endure and “carry the brand” can usually be seen with hindsight. Whatever the case maybe Lil Wayne now sits on top of the hip hop game.

The hype leading up to Lil Wayne's most recent album “Tha Carter III” has not been seen in the music industry in some time. The New Orleans born rapper illustrates how the so-called dying music industry and hip hop along with it how to survive, make money, and thrive CONTINUE

Sojourner Truth Would Sojourner Truth Want To 'Lick The Rapper?' by Zekita

One morning while riding in my car I decided to venture away from my regular News programming on the radio and turned to one of our local Hip Hop and R&B stations. It wasn’t long before the commercial for some debt creating pay-day loan went off and my ears, mind, and soul was being violated by rapper lil’ Wayne’s song ‘Lollipop.’ As I listened in disgust to the monotony of his lyrics (similar to many I had heard in some contemporary rap songs today) about how some women wanted to ‘lick the rapper’ amongst other things, my eyes began to tear up from those degrading and humiliating lyrics. Keeping in mind that I am in no way picking on any one rapper, I began to think about all of the African American women who fall subject to those words and gobble them up as a ‘way to behave.’ Pardon the pun. And then I thought back to the glorious African American women like Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Nzingha, Yaa Asante, and Mary McLeod Bethune. I turned my thoughts to these women and I wonder. I wonder if our fore-mentioned female ancestors are watching us from the other side in utter disgust and humiliation.

I wonder if they cry for us. I wonder if their spirits cringe and fall to their knees in agony as they watch their descendants fall into a deeper pit of sexual promiscuity, self imposed inferiority and hatred, and total mis-education. CONTINUE

The DL Down Low and Debatable
by Peggy Butler
*Black women talk candidly about men on the down-low. Warning: If you freak out at the mention of the word sex, reading this article could tarnish your moral values.

On a blustery winter morning in December of 1999, Essex Garvey, a stay-at-home mom of four, was sorting laundry, when a glaring exhibition caught her eye. On the TV was a woman recently diagnosed with HIV. Noting the pained look on the woman's face, Garvey discovered that the culprit was the woman's boyfriend, an admitted bisexual. Pointing wildly at the TV she sighed: "Damn, that woman should have known her man was poking the log at both ends of the totem pole. Now, that would never happen to me." CONTINUE
