Poetry Corner
Africa
by Maya Angelou

Thus she had lain
sugar cane sweet
deserts her hair
golden her feet
mountains her breasts
two Niles her tears
Thus she has lain
Black through the years.

Over the white seas
rime white and cold
brigands ungentled
icicle bold
took her young daughters
sold her strong sons
churched her with Jesus
bled her with guns.
Thus she has lain.

Now she is rising
remember her pain
remember the loses
her screams loud and vain
remember her riches
her history slain
now she is striding
although she had lain.

Conyers and Sharpton
Still No Justice

Another day, another judge acquits officers of the shooting of an unarmed black man in New York City. Although two of the cops involved in the Sean Bell case were black here is where the mainstream media misses the racism. If the three young men were all white males in there early twenties leaving a bachelor party at a strip club, not a single shot would have been fired by those undercover police officers acquitted in New York. Is there anyone who really believes that the police would have fired on three young white men?

In the constant acquittals of police officers for shooting unarmed black men its clear that one holding of the Supreme Court's decision in Dred Scott still stands, that the black man has no rights that are bound to be respected by the white man. This courtroom truism seems to specifically apply to police departments across America regardless of the race of the cop who uses there weapons against black men. CONTINUE

Kobe Bryant Kevin Garnett
NBA Makeover Is Complete

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has allot to be excited about. Just a few years ago critics were predicting the demise of the NBA, with thugged out high schoolers going straight to the NBA, the media in constant search for the next Michael Jordan, and the boring yet sound San Antonio Spurs winning championships. However, this year the NBA feels different, the NBA's Western Conference is so good top to bottom any of the top six teams could make its case for the NBA title. In the east, the Boston Celtics with the additions of Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen along with Paul Pierce has made the Celtics a must see team like the Bulls of Jordan or the Shaq and Kobe show. Coupled with the fundamentally sound Detroit Pistons, the top two teams in the East may be better than all those top teams in the west.

Story lines abound in this years NBA. Kobe Bryant may win his first NBA MVP award with steady and when needed spectacular performances after a difficult offseason where he was frustrated with the Lakers for going nowhere and making bad moves while in the prime of his career. CONTINUE

Barrack Obama Jeremiah Wright
Obama's Wright

The controversy surrounding sermons by Barack Obama's pastor Jeremiah Wright have been discussed throughout the web and blogosphere. Thanks to those who seek the truth and YouTube one can see the entire Wright sermon in context where he is quoting a U.S. Ambassador who says after 9/11 that chickens have come home to roost. The controversy reached such heights due to media networks such as the right-wing Fox News whose repeated unfair and unbalanced examination of the clips of Wright fueled the fire. Obama's speech on race was at first hailed by the media as the beginning as an honest dialogue on race. A couple of weeks later the speech is now becoming marginalized caught up in the next spin cycle.

The truth is Americans can not have an honest dialogue about race because most Ameicans are ignorant of true American history and the history of western civilization of the last 500 years. CONTINUE

Hillary Clinton Barrack Obama John McCain
Win The Battle Lose The War

There are a few questions that remain after several months of democratic primaries. Here are a few:

Will Barrack Obama and Hillary Clinton bruise each other to the point that John McCain cakewalks into the White House? This remains to be seen but Hillary's now infamous 3am ad does not help Obama if he is the democratic nominee. Any question regarding the democratic nominee's fitness for the office should be off limits to the two candidates but now Obama having lost Texas and Ohio will be forced to respond and vet Hillary a bit in what will likely be a negative Pennsylvania primary.

Super delegates or elected delegates? The nightmare scenario as neither Obama or Hillary can win enough elected delegates to claim the nomination. Obama has won the most states and has a delegate lead but Hillary has one the big states and a few swing states. The race is essentially tied which leaves the Super delegates to decide the nomination as are the rules of the democratic party. No matter how this plays out or who the majority of the Super delegates rally behind the veto-like role of the super delegate cannot be beneficial to any candidate. The fallout could tilt the presidecy to John McCain as a certain percent of Hillary voters could go to John McCain if she isn't the nominee and a certain percent of Obama voters could not show up election day if he is not the nominee. CONTINUE

Barrack Obama The Jesse Jackson Card

It was inevitable that political pundits would compare Senator Barack Obama's run for President with that of Rev. Jesse Jackson's run of 1984 and 1988, however, no one knew that pundit would be former President Bill Clinton. The Clinton camp and Obama camp insists that race and gender will play no role in their campaign tactics, if this is true then why would Bill compare Obama's winning in South Carolina to Jesse Jackson's victories? What do Obama and Jesse have in common other than their race?

Bill Clinton told a reporter in South Carolina...CONTINUE

Obama Win In Iowa Is Now The Time? A Look At Obama's Win In Iowa

Obama's win in an overwhelmingly white Iowa may catapult him to the Democratic nomination. Iowans looked pass race and to the ideas and character of the candidate and chose Barack Obama (Dr. King would be proud). Although Obama's victory is historic, Jesse Jackson won several primaries in 1988 but later fell to Michael Dukakis for the democratic nomination. Bill Clinton failed to win the Iowa caucus and the New Hampshire primary but won the nomination.

Obama's message of hope and bridging the Karl Rove red state/blue state divide is appealing to a nation tired of partisan stalemate and corporate control over the U.S. government. But can Obama's message of reaching out really bring about the change he seeks. CONTINUE

Rove and Bush
Short Division: The Legacy of George W. Bush, Karl Rove and the Politics of Fear

No other political operative with an office in the White House has done more to divide the citizens of the United States in seven years, than anyone else in a generation. By some political pundits he is called Bush's brain or the genius. But to others genius is not the first word tha comes to mind when it comes to longtime Bush political advisor Karl Rove its criminal. Karl Rove was intimately involved in the smear campaign of Valerie Plame, the firing of U.S. attorneys for investigatring republican lawmakers, the campaign to use gay marriage on state wide ballots as a means to get out evangelicals in the 2004 election, (in some states where it was already banned). As soon as he stepped foot from the White House he should have been placed in handcuffs. CONTINUE

Condi Rice in Darfur
The Trickle Down Iraq Effect: Crisis in Myanmar, Darfur and Other Global Hotspots

The repercussions of the U.S. involvement in Iraq, will go beyond that of Iraq itself. The U.S. involvement in Iraq and the moral ambiguity leading up the invasion has left the U.S. ineffective in putting pressure on other real evil doers. For instance the U.S. can apply little pressure on China and its support of the genocidal regime in Sudan or its support for the military government in Burma or in other global hot spots. CONTINUE

Colin Powell
Is Colin Powell Their Best Candidate?

On the Republican nomination side, admittedly a race that gets no love and attention from BlackState, we have observed that the best candidate for the Republican nomination, the one who is in line and whose turn is up is not even in the race. Its former Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Colin Powell. In a party that bows down to seniority and turns in line, it is Colin Powell's turn. Powell was on the Joint Chiefs under Reagan, Chairman under the elder Bush and Secretary of State under the current Bush. A veteran and statesman who brings instant credibility, his presentation before the UN convinced many Americans that Iraq was a threat, though we now know that most of that presentation was a lie. Reports have indicated that he spent many hours trying to convince W. Bush to not invade Iraq. CONTINUE

Frederick Douglass as President
The Great Black Presidents

This article gives a shout out to the great African Americans who would have been great Presidents of the United States but for historical racism. Here what if Barrack Obama was posed not to be the first serious African American challenger for President but the fourth fifth or sixth potential black president. Here we examine who could have been President but for the premature end of reconstruction following slavery which gave rise to Jim Crow segregation and 90 additional years of legal oppression for African Americans. Like the American presidents of European descent, not all of the black presidents would have been great, some would have been just average like the Presidents we can?t name. CONTINUE

Men and Women
Top Ten Reasons Why It's Hard to Date a Black Woman by Matthew Lynch

Unlike black women who struggle against the current of the apparent man shortage, searching for eligible candidates is not an arduous task for black men, and never has been. Studies show that for every available man, there are at least seven single, willing and able Black women who are ready to be signed, sealed and delivered to the first derivable and desirable bachelor who crosses their path. Black men can just about have their pick when it comes to choices in the dating arena. Not to mention, online dating in the last 5 years has even widened their circle of choices to national and international possibilities. Still, fewer and fewer are choosing to date black women. The DL Down Low and Debatable
by Peggy Butler
*Black women talk candidly about men on the down-low. Warning: If you freak out at the mention of the word sex, reading this article could tarnish your moral values.

On a blustery winter morning in December of 1999, Essex Garvey, a stay-at-home mom of four, was sorting laundry, when a glaring exhibition caught her eye. On the TV was a woman recently diagnosed with HIV. Noting the pained look on the woman's face, Garvey discovered that the culprit was the woman's boyfriend, an admitted bisexual. Pointing wildly at the TV she sighed: "Damn, that woman should have known her man was poking the log at both ends of the totem pole. Now, that would never happen to me." CONTINUE
