Poetry Corner
Africa
by Maya Angelou

Thus she had lain
sugar cane sweet
deserts her hair
golden her feet
mountains her breasts
two Niles her tears
Thus she has lain
Black through the years.

Over the white seas
rime white and cold
brigands ungentled
icicle bold
took her young daughters
sold her strong sons
churched her with Jesus
bled her with guns.
Thus she has lain.

Now she is rising
remember her pain
remember the loses
her screams loud and vain
remember her riches
her history slain
now she is striding
although she had lain.

Obama 2012
Grading President Obama Through The First Three Quarters

Now that we're heading into the fourth quarter of the first Obama Administration its a good idea to examine the first 3/4ths of what he hopes is his first term as President. Before any second term, President Obama will be reapplying for his job as commander in chief. But how do we assess the performance of President Obama. Hs predecessor George W. Bush's disastrous Presidency has undoubtedly hung a huge shadow over the economic policy and direction of Obama but to some Americans whose memory are often short that was a long time ago. He will be judged on his performance which includes all that he inherited and his responses. Considering that we thought appropriate to give the President grades as a way of assessing his performance through the first three quarters of his administration. CONTINUE

Newt Gingrich Rick Santorum
Republicans Letting The Racist Flag Fly

After getting rid of the pesky Herman Cain, the GOP have seemed somewhat free in just letting there inner racism reign free. Most notably Newt Gingrich whose racism is not actually hidden. Newt blankedly stated that African Americans should be demanding paychecks and not be satisfied with food stamps. This despite over 70 percent of Americans receiving food stamps are poor white Americans. Newt also has a plan for Black males who receive less from Social Security because of dying earlier. Newt of course does not address poverty and health conditions that lead to a shorter life span. Why does he single out African Americans when most Americans are struggling? Rick Santorum is alleged to have stated that he doesn't want to make black people's lives better by giving them someone else's money. What? Why? CONTINUE

Obama Jobs Speech
President Obama Sets Jobs Agenda

President Obama in a strong speech before a joint session of Congress implored the Congress to act to support the millions of Americans searching for jobs. With unemployment hovering at 9 percent and economic growth slowing the President put forth reasonable measures to help create jobs and grow the economy. CONTINUE

Soviets leaving Afghanistan
Great Now End The War In Afghanistan

Now that Osama bin Ladin has been killed the primary rational for the war in Afghanistan can no longer be sustained. The War in Afghanistan could not have ended, U.S. troops could not have been withdrawn without the capturing or killing of bin Ladin. Now that this has happened it is now time for President Obama to declare victory in Afghanistan, and pull the majority of the troops out. Much like in Iraq a smaller number of troops to train and support an Afghanistan military that could ward off, a recalcitrant al Qaeda or another terrorist organization or the Taliban. The wars on terror have according to some estimates costs the U.S. in lives and over $3 trillion in treasure. Trillions of dollars that could alleviate debt foster economic growth, provide health care of all Americans and jobs. CONTINUE

Wisconsin
The Battle for Wisconsin and the Soul of America

The battle over collective bargaining rights for those who are employees of the government of Wisconsin is a microcosm of the battle for the soul of America itself. In Wisconsin thousands and thousands of people have protested in support of the teachers', the janitors', the social workers', the prison guards' rights to organize as a group for a reasonable pay, reasonable health benefits, and reasonable hours of work. Rights that have been enshrined for over fifty years. Today just 18 people bearing the badge of the Republican party voted to eliminate those rights for workers in Wisconsin. The Republicans led by newly elected Republican Governor Scott Walker who originally forced this measure on a budget bill but later stripped the budget measures and passed the union killing provisions alone, is nothing short of a suit bought and paid for by those who created the Tea Party - the billionaire aptly named Koch brothers. The people of Wisconsin must move to immediately recall every Republican who voted for this measure, recall the Governor, and repeal this affront to the rights of the people of Wisconsin. Then they came for the trade unions...but I wasn't a trade unionist... CONTINUE

Rene Preval President Obama
Let The Haitians Work Out Their Differences

It is fair for anyone to offer opinions on and analyzes of Haiti’s recent election. It is clear that there were many irregularities during the election. There can be disagreement, of course, as to whether or not the irregularities were malfeasance or simple mistakes, mistakes that were likely to occur in any country facing similar conditions on the ground. However, reading opinions and newspaper articles from the United States (U.S.) as well as in other countries, I can’t help but wonder what would the U.S. do if the demands that the writers of these opinions and supposedly independent journalists are making on Haiti were being made on the U.S. government and the American people. Having lived in the U.S. country for many years, I can certainly say that they would be regarded as being unreasonable, to put it mildly. CONTINUE
